WBCS Syllabus & Exam Pattern 2022: West Bengal Public Service Commission release notification for the WBCS Exam in the month of November. It seems to be a tough exam, but you can easily crack it by smart study, proper planning, and preparation. There are four groups in WBCS officers viz. WBCS Syllabus 2022
West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) selects WBCS officers through examination which is held in three consecutive phases which are preliminary, main, and interview.
In this post, we have discussed the WBCS syllabus and exam pattern for both preliminary and main exams. If you want to prepare for WBCS exam, then you must know the whole syllabus and exam pattern for prelims and the main exam.
WBCS Preliminary Exam Pattern
Preliminary exam is the first phase for the selection of a WBCS Officer. In this stage, serious candidates are shorted out for the main examination. In this examination there is 200 questions carrying 1 marks each from eight different subjects. All of the questions asked is in multiple choice questions (MCQ) type. From 8 different subjects there will be 25 questions providing 25 marks each.
There will be negative marking for each question, 1 marks will be deducted for every 3 wrong answer. The cut off marks of the prelims varies from 95-110 that means you have to get only 47-55%. Subject wise number division is shown in the below table:

WBCS Syllabus for Preliminary Exam
As per the official notification, the prelims exam is meant to serve as a screening test only for the purpose of selection of candidates for the main exam. The marks obtained in the prelims exam by the candidates will not be considered for final selection.
The syllabus for WBCS prelims exam is given in the below:
English Composition: Synonyms, Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases, Vocabulary test, Phrasal Verbs, the same words bearing more than one meaning, use of appropriate and qualifying words etc.
History of India: social, economic, and political.
Indian National Movement: Nature and character of the Nineteenth Century Resurgence, Growth of Nationalism and Attainment of Independence.
Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal: Physical, Social and Economic Geography of the country, including the main features of Indian Agricultural and Natural Resources.
General Science: general appreciation and understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation and experience as may be expected of a well-educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.
General Mental Ability: Logical perception, understanding and natural conclusion.
Indian Polity and Economy: Knowledge of the country’s Political System, Panchayatee Raj, Community Development and Planning in India.
Current Events of National and International Importance: Significant events affecting India and its relations with the world

WBCS Main Exam Pattern
In current exam format, main examination comprised six compulsory papers (including English & Bengali) and one optional subject (consist two papers) for Group A & B only to be chosen while you do your from fill up.
If you want to sit only for group C & D, you need not to choose optional paper. You can choose your optional paper from the given list. This is the most vital stage of the selection process as its marks decides your rank. Subject details are provided below:

Note: Total 1600 marks for Group A & B and 1200 marks for Group B & C.
WBCS Main Exam Syllabus
As per the official notification, out of six compulsory papers four papers i.e. General Studies – I, General Studies – II, the constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of reserve bank of India, and Arithmetic and test of reasoning will be MCQ type question and remaining two compulsory papers i.e. Paper – I and Paper – II will be conventional type written exam. So the syllabus for six compulsory paper are given below:
Paper I
- Subject: Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali
- Topics: Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from English to Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santali.
Paper II
- Subject: English
- Topics: Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santali to English.
Paper III
- Subject: General Studies I
- Topics: (i) Indian History with special emphasis on National Movement and (ii) Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal.
Paper IV
- Subject: General Studies II
- Topics: Science and Scientific & Technological advancement, Environment, General Knowledge and Current Affairs.
Paper V
- Subject: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy
- Topics: Role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India.
Paper VI
- Subject: Arithmetic
- Topics: Similar to that of the Compulsory Mathematics paper at the Madhyamik Examination of the Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal.
- Subject: Test of Reasoning
- Topics: Analytical Reasoning: Data Sufficiency, Logical Reasoning : (i) Logical Deduction (ii) Forcefulness of the Arguments(iii) Implication of sentences (iv) Inferring from diagrams, Series: (i) Letter series, (ii) Number series, Inferring from Data, Analogy tests, Symbol Interpretation, Mathematical puzzles, Odd man out, Perception test, Non-verbal reasoning & Selecting the correct sequence.
