Railway Recruitment Board
Many new employees are recruited every year on the Indian Railways. Railway Recruitment Board is an organization of the Government of India which has work for the appointment of new employees on the Indian Railways. There are 21 railway recruitment boards in Railways all over India:
Railway Recruitment Category
New employees appointed into four categories in the Indian Railways like as Group A, Group B, Group C, and Group D.
Group A: The highest level of the post in Indian Railways. Recruitment for ‘Group A’ post of Indian Railway shall be made by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The medium of appointment of ‘Group A’ officers is civil service examination, Engineering Service examination and medical service examination which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission.

- Indian Railway Personnel Service(IRPS)
- Indian Railway Account Service(IRAS)
- Railway Protection Force(RPS)
b) Engineering Service Examination
- Indian Railway Service of Engineers(IRSE)
- Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers(IRSME)
- Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers(IRSEE)
- Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers(IRSSE)
- Indian Railway Stores Service(IRSS)
c) Medical Service Examination
- Indian Railway Medical Service(IRMS)
Group B: Recruitment of ‘Group B’ is filled by the promotion on the basis of eligible ‘group C’ employees which is done by the General Manager.
Group C: Recruitment of ‘group C’ which is Non-Technical Popular Category i.e. Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Senior Clerk Cum Typist, Trains Clerk Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk, Traffic Assistant, Goods Guard, Junior Account Assistant Cum Typist, Senior Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk, Commercial Apprentice, Station Master etc. and are selected by Railway Recruitment Board(RRBs).
Group D: Recruitment of ‘group D,’ i.e. Helper/Assistant in Various Technical Department (Electrical, Engineering, Mechanical and S&T Departments), Track Maintainer Grade IV, Assistant Pointsman etc. and are selected by Railway Recruitment Cell(RRCs).
