Full form of SDM is Sub-Divisional Magistrate. SDM also known as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) or Sub Collector (SC) also called Sub-District Magistrate or Sub-Divisional Judge.

The SDM is the main and chief civil body of any subdivision. The SDM control all the administrative services in his assigned sub-division. An SDM handled all the land related issues, revenue, law and order in the district.

The SDM can issue various types of registration, various types of licenses, certificates, renewals etc. At the time of election of LokSabha or VidhanSabha in the states the SDMs are play important role to organize the election process. The SDM also takes part in different jurisdiction process under the Criminal Procedure Code 1973.

Eligibility Criteria

Education Qualification: Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university.

Age limit:

  • General Class: 21 years – 35 years
  • Backward Class: 21 years – 40 years
  • Scheduled Castes and Tribes: 21 years – 45 years

Selection Process of SDM

There are two option to become a SDM, one is by the PCS Exam organized by the state, and another is Union Public Service Commission/ Civil Service Examination organized by central government. There are three parts in both examinations:

i) Preliminary exam

ii) Main exam

iii) Interview

Responsibility of SDM

There are lots of duties of an SDM. They handled a number of activities in their assigned sub-division. Here some of their activity discussed at below:

  • All the administrative work of his assigned area is done by SDM.
  • All the territorial Disputes in his area will be settled by assigned SDM.
  • All the land records are kept by an SDM and the revenue of working land is collected by assigned SDM.
  • An SDM handled all the revenue related issues; they collect it, calculate and report the information.
  • Demarcation and encroachment related issues are solved by the SDM.
  • Public land protection and land registration are done by SDM.
  • Maintaining the law conduct a fair election process.
  • Issuing different type of registration.
  • Issuing licenses and the renewals are done by the SDM.
  • Issuing many type of certificates.
  • Under the Criminal Procedure Code 1973 and some other act an SDM has the judicial power. He can take charge for some cases and can conduct queries, interrogation etc.
  • They have the responsibility to save people from manmade or natural calamities.

SDM Salary Structure

The salary of an IAS officer increased after the implementation of the 7th pay commission. An SDM get ₹ 55,000 (Approx.) in hand.

The pay scale is ₹ 15,600 – ₹ 39,100 and Grade Pay is ₹ 5,400.

SDM Salary After 6th Pay Commission

There is some difference in salary amount basis on assigned place. Here we add the amount of salary basis on cities, like class A, class B and class C cities.

i) Salary for Class A Cities:

  • Basic Pay: ₹ 15600
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 5400
  • Net Basic Pay: ₹ 21000
  • Dearness Allowance: ₹ 26250 (125% of Net Basic Pay)
  • House Rent Allowance: ₹ 6300 (30% of Net Basic)
  • Transport Allowance: ₹ 7087{15% of (Basic+ DA)}
  • Gross Salary: ₹ 60637
  • Deductions: ₹ 10000 (Approx.)
  • Salary Amount in Hand: ₹ 50637

ii) Salary for Class B Cities:

  • Basic Pay: ₹ 15600
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 5400
  • Net Basic Pay: ₹ 21000
  • Dearness Allowance: ₹ 26250 (125% of Net Basic Pay)
  • House Rent Allowance: ₹ 4200 (20% of Net Basic)
  • Transport Allowance: ₹ 7087{15% of (Basic+ DA)}
  • Gross Salary: ₹ 58537
  • Deductions: ₹ 10000 (Approx.)
  • Salary Amount in Hand: ₹ 48537

iii) Salary for Class C Cities:

  • Basic Pay: ₹ 15600
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 5400
  • Net Basic Pay: ₹ 21000
  • Dearness Allowance: ₹ 26250 (125% of Net Basic Pay)
  • House Rent Allowance: ₹ 2100 (10% of Net Basic)
  • Transport Allowance: ₹ 7087{15% of (Basic+ DA)}
  • Gross Salary: ₹ 56437
  • Deductions: ₹10000 (Approx.)
  • Salary Amount in Hand: ₹ 46437

SDM Salary After 7th Pay Commission

Salary for Class A Cities:

  • Pay Bond: ₹ 561 00
  • Grade Pay: 0
  • Dearness Allowance: ₹ 1000
  • House Rent Allowance: ₹ 4000
  • Transport Allowance: ₹ 3000
  • Gross Salary: ₹ 64100
  • Deductions: ₹ 10000 (Approx.)
  • Salary Amount in Hand: ₹ 54100 (Approx.)

The provision of deduction amount as:

(i) Contribution for Heath services = ₹ 325
(ii) Premium of Employees Group insurance scheme = ₹ 120
(iii) Contribution for NPS = 10% of Basic + DA

  • Grade Pay: ₹ 20000
  • Pay Scale: ₹ 50000 to ₹ 150000

ii) Special Secretary or COLLECTOR or various head of a Government Department

  • Grade: Junior Administrative Grade
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 23000
  • Pay Scale: ₹ 50000 to ₹ 150000

iii) Secretary of a Government Ministry

  • Grade: Selection Grade
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 26000
  • Pay Scale: ₹ 100000 to ₹ 200000

iv) Principal Secretary of a Very Important Government Department

  • Grade: Super Time Scale
  • Grade Pay: ₹ 30000
  • Pay Scale: ₹ 100000 to ₹ 200000

v) Chief Secretary of a States Government or Union Secretary of various Central Ministry

  • Grade: Apex Scale
