Initially, the name of the SRM Institute of Science and Technology was SRM University. In India, SRM group is one of the most familiar education group and situated over 4 states. The headquarter of this education group is situated in Chennai, (Kattankulathur), Tamil Nadu.

In the year of 1985, this group of education was started as a polytechnic college named Valliammai Polytechnic college. In 2002, the university of SRM was founded as per the UGC act.
